Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple (Thiru, Kanchipuram)

This is Kanchipuram‘s most prominent temple. The entire pastime (original narrative) centres on Lord Brahma’s desire to serve this deity form of the Lord. Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is also known as the Devaraja Swamy Temple. The shrine is situated atop the elephant-shaped rock known as Hastigiri. Lord Sri Varadaraja Perumal has been one of the most well-known deities on Earth since the Satya Yuga, and he is revered by great Acharyas.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu paid a visit to the Sri Varadaraja Perumal shrine in Kanchipuram in 1511 A.D. Sri Chaitanya-Charitamrita Madhya lila 9.69–70 states that the Lord then visited a sacred spot known as Vishnu-kanchi. There He beheld the Laksmi-Narayana deities and offered His obeisance and many prayers to appease them. Vishnu-kanchi is located approximately 5 kilometres from Kanchipuram. Lord Varadaraja, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, lives here. There is also a large lake named Ananta-Sarovara. When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited Vishnu-kanchi for two days, he danced and performed kirtan in rapture. Everyone who witnessed him became a devotee of Lord Krishna.

Sri Ramanujacarya lived in Kanchipuram and practised daily worship of Sri Varadaraja with great love and devotion. We must offer our love and devotional prayers here, as Lord Varadaraja will bestow benefits on us. We should seek the Absolute Truth, Sri Varadaraja, for the highest benediction. The benefit of perpetual service to His disciples, the blessing of purity, unalloyed love, and unconditional love in all circumstances. We should not ask the Absolute Truth for mundane things of this world.

The History of Golden and Silver Lizards

Every day, two Gautama Rishi followers would fill water containers for their Guru. When they placed the tumbler in front of their Guru, they were surprised to discover a lizard jumping out. Rishi cursed them for their recklessness, and they immediately changed into lizards. The two disciples lingered in Kanchipuram as lizards till Indra arrived to worship Varadaraja Perumal and freed them from their curse. A golden and silver lizard can be found in the temple hall, immediately beyond the Lord Varadarajan main altar, to commemorate this.

There are two major gopurams: the eastern gopuram, built by Krishnadeva Raya and the western temple tower, built by the Pallavas. The temple contains lovely pavilions in the courtyard and a stunning hundred-pillared hall with sculptures depicting the Ramayana, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Lord Varadharaja Swamy lives on the upper level.A shrine for Yoga Nrsimhadeva is located beneath Varadaraj’s Sannidhi (altar) on the ground floor. Anantha Sarovara, a sacred Pushkarini, is located within the temple’s boundary.

Two large mandapas are located under the tank north of the temple’s hundred-pillar mandapam, where the forty-foot-long Athi Varadaraja Perumal is reclining. Every forty years, the wooden deity is brought out for devotees’ darshan. Perumal is offered special pujas. The temple houses an impressive collection of old and rare jewellery donated by Vijayanagar monarchs, Muslim rulers, and English rulers. Robert Clive of the East India Company donated a piece of extremely expensive jewellery.
